PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The aim of the project was to unite young people from Europe and Africa, encouraging them to take an active part in the cultural life of their communities, and thus to increase the potential for socio-cultural and creative activities as a means to combat youth unemployment. Direct participants in the project were 30 youths and 13 youth workers who participated in a three-day seminar in the South Africa- Johannesburg in November 2013, and in a five-day youth academy, which was held in Dobrich-Bulgaria in June 2014. The learned during the two seminars was put into practice in two pilot cultural activities - International Youth Festival and video project, the result of which was 16 DVDs with interviews, telling the stories of young people engaged in creative activities and sharing their experience, achievements and difficulties encountered along the way.
Furthermore the discs within the project were prepared and two short readings in English, based on the discussion topics of the seminars in Johannesburg and Dobrich and bilingual brochure in Bulgarian and English, which gives information created within the project Support Center for volunteer in Africa and useful links for those interested in volunteer programs. The aim isthe materials to be distributed by all organizations involved in the project in order to reach a wider audience. In this sense, in each partner country included in the project organized one-day seminar, which aimed to attract the attention of many young people and the number of participants in the project to reach 42 young people and 23 youth workers.

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT:

The project's overall objective is to promote active youth participation in culture and to build youth workers' and youth leaders' capacity to maximize the potential of community-based cultural and creative activities for tackling the problems of youth unemployment and for promoting social inclusion, social innovation, gender empowerment and sustainable human development in European and African societies.

The focus of the project were:

  • Promoting cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, in particular through a) encouraging the mobility of artists and culture professionals, b) promoting access to culture, including through sustainable cultural tourism, digitization, art education and development of citizens’ intercultural competences. Intercultural dialogue is a key prerequisite for the EU’s ability to achieve inclusive growth;
  • promotion of culture as a catalyst for creativity and non-technological innovation, including through
    a) Promoting synergies and partnerships between culture and education, as well as research and business, in support of creativity, employment and innovation, and skills and competences necessary for creative activities;
    b) Promoting managerial, business and entrepreneurial training and other relevant capacity building for those engaged in socio-cultural work;
  • maximizing the contribution of culture to sustainable development, including by encouraging the use of sustainable approaches and green technologies in cultural activities, by promoting cultural tourism and by encouraging the role of culture in raising awareness of sustainable development issues;
  • promotion of culture as a vital element in the EU’s international relations, including through supporting
    a) Cultural and artistic exchanges, improving the skills and mobility of artists and culture professionals, building the capacities of the cultural sectors of third countries;
    b) The mobility, cultural and artistic education and media literacy of young people, as well as their access to culture and artistic expressions,;
    c) Recognizing the role of culture for development.
